Dog handlers participate in American Kennel Club (AKC) dog shows throughout North America.  While there is no formal certification for handlers, there is extensive training that most dog handlers go through prior to charging for their services.  Many dog handlers begin in juniors learning the mechanics of handling a dog, while others join the sport later in life.

Most handlers specialize in a particular breed or group of dogs.  Some are all breed handlers.
