The Hobbyist breeder is who this book is designed to help. The hobbyist breeder is someone that interested in a breed of dog, and works toward improving upon the breed.  They do research on the breeds and their standard (what the breed is expected to look like and do- each dog has been bred for a specific purpose from hunting to protection, to companionship, even turning prayer wheels).  They carefully choose their breeding stock, researching pedigrees looking for outstanding representations of their breed, along with excellent temperament and health issues.  Hobbyists title their dogs, be it confirmation (think Best in Show), obedience, rally, or other types of AKC or UKC titles. Some are involved in rare breeds, working towards having their breed recognized by AKC.  Hobbyists dogs live in their homes or are rotated through their homes if they also have kennels.  Their pups are whelped in a part of their home and they are carefully placed in pet homes with spay/neuter contracts, have health guarantees, and a life time return policy so as to prevent them from ending up in shelters somewhere.  Hobbyist breeders health check their breeding stock before they are bred so as to ensure the healthiest of puppies, and only dogs with proper temperaments are bred.

Hobbyist breeders make sure their dogs have proper health care at all times and, after pups are whelped, spend time daily caring for, cleaning up after, and socializing the pups their animals whelp. Hobbyists work with mentors (usually the breeders they get their foundation animals from) and the parent clubs of the breed to build a breeding program to insure that they are on the right road.

So, now that you know what types of breeders are out there, which one do most identify with? Obviously the information contained in the book can help anyone start their path with breeding dogs. It is up to the reader to decide their reasons why.  This book is not designed to encourage someone to breed animals rather it is here to help now that you have made the decision to do so. Breeding dogs is a serious responsibility. It is a time consuming, heart consuming and can also be a money consuming proposition. It is also rewarding, heartwarming and wonderful at times.
